At Least Nine Shot Dead in Ecuador Bar Massacre

In a horrific act of violence that has shaken the southwestern coastal town of General Villamil Playas, at least nine people were gunned down on Saturday, 19 July 2025, while enjoying a game of pool at a local bar. The attack, which unfolded in the working-class neighbourhood of Santa Isabel, also known as Altamira, saw armed men burst into the establishment around 15:00 local time, opening fire on patrons with automatic rifles. This brutal incident, described by locals as a massacre, has left families grieving and raised fresh fears about the grip of drug-related gangs on everyday life in Ecuador.
