The United States Geological Survey has reported that a magnitude 6.7 earthquake has occurred off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The quake struck in the ocean approximately 103 kilometers from the city of Lae at a depth of 45.4 km.
The quake was recorded at 11:35 Bali time. The American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any alert for a possible tsunami to make landfall.
“People very close to it would have got a very, very strong shake, and there’s a possibility of damage there right in that vicinity,” said seismologist David Jepsen of Geoscience Australia
“And then there’s the township of Lae, about 100km to the west of that event, and there’s the possibility there could be some light damage in that major township.”
