Following the resignation of Cameron in June 2016, May announced her candidacy for theleadership of the Conservative Partyand quickly emerged as the front-runner. She won the first ballot of Conservative MPs on 5 July by a significant margin, and two days later won the votes of 199 MPs, going forward to face a vote of Conservative Party members in a contest withAndrea Leadsom. Leadsom's withdrawal from the election on 11 July led to May's appointment as leader the same day.
Born on 1 October 1956 inEastbourne, Sussex, May is the daughter of Zaidee Mary (née Barnes; 1928–1982) and Hubert Brasier (1917–1981). Her father was aChurch of Englandclergyman.[5][6][7][8]Her parents both died suddenly, her father in a car accident.[9]
May was educated at primary and grammar schools in the State sector, as well as a short spell at an independent Catholic school. She initially attended Heythrop Primary School, Oxfordshire,[10]followed by St. Juliana's Convent School for Girls,[11]aRoman Catholicindependent school inBegbroke, which closed in 1984.[12]At the age of 13, she won a place at the former Holton Park Girls' Grammar School inWheatley, Oxfordshire. In 1971, the school was abolished and became the site of the newWheatley Park Comprehensive Schoolduring her time as a pupil.[11][13]May then went to theUniversity of Oxfordwhere she readgeographyatSt Hugh's College, graduating with a second class BA degree in 1977.[14]
May's has been married toPhilip John May, an investment banker currently employed byCapital International, since 6 September 1980; the couple have no children.[157]May has stated her regret that, for health reasons, she has not been able to have children with her husband, saying in one interview that, "You look at families all the time and you see there is something there that you don’t have".[158][159]
Outside politics, May lists her interests as walking and cooking.[160]May is known for a love of fashion and in particular eccentric shoes, wearing leopard-print heels at her 'Nasty Party' speech in 2002.
Since coming into prominence as a front-bench politician, May's public image has divided media opinion, especially from some in the traditionalist right-wing press.[161]Commenting on May's debut asHome Secretary, Anne Perkins ofThe Guardianobserved that "she'll be nobody's stooge",[162]whileCristina OdoneofThe Daily Telegraphpredicted her to be "the rising star" of the Coalition Government.[163]Allegra Stratton, then withThe Guardian, praised May as showing managerial acumen.[164]
Her parliamentary expenses have been "modest" in recent years (about £15,000 from 2005 to 2009).[165]
May is a member of theChurch of Englandand regularly worships at church on Sunday.[2][3][167]The daughter of an Anglicanpriest,ReverendHubert Brasier, May has said that her Christian faith "... is part of me. It is part of who I am and therefore how I approach things".[168]
Prior to and since her appointment to Government, May actively supports a variety of campaigns on policy issues in her constituency and at the national level of politics. She has spoken at theFawcett Societypromoting the cross-party issue of gender equality. May was nominated as one of the Society's Inspiring Women of 2006.[169]

梅伊在牛津大學求學時經由前巴基斯坦總理碧娜芝.布托(Benazir Bhutto)介紹,結識比她小2歲的人生伴侶菲立普(Philip John May),1980年23歲的梅伊與菲立普共結連理,雖然菲立普也曾有從政的念頭,但決定轉戰金融界,支持梅伊一展政治抱負,兩人相知相惜走過36個年頭,但膝下無子。
