Early life
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane was born on September 29, 1994, in Edison, New Jersey.[6]Her parents dropped out of college after her mother discovered that she was pregnant with her.[7] Her mother, Nicole, works for security in a hospital, and her father, Chris, manages a car dealership.[8][9] Chris is primarily of African-American descent with some Irish heritage, while Nicole is of Italian, Hungarian, and Irish descent.[10][11] Halsey has two younger brothers, Sevian and Dante.[12] She played the violin, viola, and cello, until moving on to the acoustic guitar when she was fourteen years old.[13]
Throughout her childhood Halsey's family moved frequently, and her parents worked many jobs. By the time she reached her teen years Halsey had been enrolled in six different schools, stating that the frequent moving during her childhood caused her to be "used to packing up and leaving, to condensing myself into a digestible version because people don't have much time to get to know me."[14] In high school Halsey participated in theatre, and was the yearbook editor. She was also named "Best Artist".[15] During high school Halsey was bullied for her tattoos and shaved head, and struggled with body image.[16] A nude photo of her was once stolen from her locker and shown around her school, causing ridicule from other students.[17] Also during high school Halsey was a fan of "emo" music and attended a Panic! at the Disco concert where she received a unique wristband, which she lost to a bully at school. After Halsey became famous she met the lead singer of the band, Brendon Urie, who in response to her story gave her two wristbands and a bouquet of flowers.[18] At seventeen Halsey attempted to commit suicide and survived, which led to a seventeen day hospitalization. Following this, she was diagnosed as bipolar, stating that her mother also struggles with bipolar disorder.[19][20] She began using recreational drugs soon after, claiming her bipolar disorder caused her to become an "unconventional child" who grew up to be an "inconvenient woman."[14] Also when she was seventeen, she started seeing a man who was twenty-four and lived on the Halsey Street in Brooklyn. Halsey stated "That’s where I first starting writing music and where I started to feel like I was a part of something bigger than my town in middle of nowhere New Jersey. Halsey is kind of like a manifestation of all the exaggerated parts of me, so it’s like an alter ego.” She also stated that the word "stuck out" to her.[21] In 2012, Halsey graduated from Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington, New Jersey.[22]
After graduating, Halsey enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design; however, she withdrew due to financial hardships and attended community college instead.[23] 
rior to college, she had relationships with other women, but stated that in college she started identifying as bisexual.[24] Halsey eventually dropped out of community college and was kicked out of her home by her parents, stating “They just didn’t agree with a lot of things about me”. Soon after she started living in a basement in lower Manhattan with a group of "degenerate stoners" who she knew through her then-boyfriend.[25] When she wasn't living there, she occasionally lived in one of New York's many homeless shelters.[26] When describing this period of her life, Halsey stated, "I remember one time I had $9 in my bank account, and bought a four-pack of Red Bull and used it to stay up overnight over the course of two or three days, because it was less dangerous to not sleep than it was to sleep somewhere random and maybe get raped or kidnapped." She would occasionally stay with her grandmother.[23]
Career
2012–2014: Career beginnings
Halsey started writing music when she was seventeen, and during 2012 she began posting videos to social media sites such as YouTube and Kik, and in particular Tumblr, under the username of se7enteenblack.[27] She became known for a parody of Taylor Swift's song "I Knew You Were Trouble" (2012) inspired by Swift's relationship with Harry Styles. She then wrote a follow up song.[28][29] Having written poems for years, Halsey began writing songs as a way to promote them; music became Halsey's "confessional approach" and a form of therapy after the difficult life she had endured.[3] She eventually went to a party and met a producer who asked her to collaborate on a song with him because he liked her voice.[23] The result, a song about her ex-boyfriend titled "Ghost", was posted by Halsey onSoundCloud several weeks after it was recorded.[23] Within hours, the song gained online popularity, and she was subsequently contacted by several record labels, with the song eventually charting and going on radio.[23] She signed with Astralwerks, feeling that they gave her more creative freedom than other labels that contacted her.[23] Following this, she played numerous acoustic shows in different cities under several stage names.[30] She chose Halsey as her permanent stage name because it is an anagram of her first name, as well as a street in Brooklyn where she spent a lot of time as a teenager.[31] She also stated Halsey was the most popular name she used.[32] During this time Halsey began doing covers of other artists' music to promote her original music.[33]
2014–2016: Badlands and breakthrough
Halsey toured with The Kooks in 2014 and performed various original songs.[34] She released her debut extended play, Room 93, on October 27, 2014.[35] The EP charted in the lower regions of the Billboard 200 and at number three on the Top Heatseekerschart.[36] She then began work on her debut studio album and performed songs from the upcoming album at South by Southwest in 2015, where she was the most tweeted about performer of the night.[37] She embarked on a co-headlining tour with Young Rising Sons in March and in June, she became the opening act for Imagine Dragons on their Smoke + Mirrors Tour (2015) during the North American leg.[38]

Halsey's debut studio album, Badlands, was released on August 28, 2015. She described Badlands as a concept album about adystopian future society known as "The Badlands", which was a metaphor for her mental state at the time, stating that each song meant something different to her.[39][40] Halsey co-wrote all of the songs on the album when she was 19, while production was handled by a number of producers, including then boyfriend, Norwegian producer Lido.[41] Musically, the album is mainly rooted in electropop,[42] alternative pop,[43] and synth-pop,[44]and features industrial undertones.[42] The album was described by Halsey as not having a "proper radio hit".[45] The album received positive reviews from music critics,[46][47] with Joe Levy of Rolling Stone citing Halsey as a "new Tumblr popstar with a knack for sticky imagery".[48] The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 115,000 copies in its first week; it was later certified Platinum by RIAA.[49][50]Badlands found success in many other countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, and Scotland, where the album peaked in the top ten; it also sold over 200,000 copies outside the US.[51][50] Badlands' first single was a rereleased "Ghost", which was certified Gold.[52] Badlands then released three new singles: "New Americana", "Colors", and "Castle", all of which were certified Platinum[53] and achieved commercial success; "New Americana" reached number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100,[54]"Colors" reached over 200 million streams on Spotify,[55] and "Castle" was rerecorded for the soundtrack of the 2016 film The Huntsman: Winter's War.[56] "Gasoline" was not released as a single and was only included on the deluxe version of Badlands, but became one of the album's most popular tracks; it reached over 100 million streams on Spotify within a year of release[57] and was certified Platinum.[53] The album was further promoted by Halsey's Badlands Tour (2015–16), and her spot as the opening act for select dates ofThe Weekend's The Madness Fall Tour (2015).[58] Notably, Many of Halsey's fans foundBadlands inspiring, with some getting tattoos based from it and many learning from it.[59][60]
Halsey was featured on the song "The Feeling" by Justin Bieber for his fourth studio album,Purpose (2015).[61][62] The song was not officially released, though entered the top forty of the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Gold by RIAA.[63] In February 2016, she was one of four female performers to partner with MAC cosmetics for their Future Forward line; Halsey released a lipstick named after herself.[64] The Senior Vice President and Group Creative Director of the company, James Gager, said "It feels like a great thing to be able to support artists who are breaking through but aren't necessarily at the top top, to push them forward."[65] In May 2016, Halsey released the song "Tokyo Narita (Freestyle)", produced by Lido.[66][67] The song was a standalone track that served as a promotional single from Halsey.[68] In July 2016, Halsey collaborated with 26 other artists for the charity single"Hands", which was a tribute for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting.[69][70]
On July 29, 2016, Halsey was featured as a vocalist on The Chainsmokers' single "Closer," a song she also cowrote.[71][72] The song achieved major commercial success; it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 consecutive weeks, topped the charts of over 20 other countries' charts, sold more than 15 million units worldwide, and is one of most streamed songs on Spotify.[73] The official lyric video for "Closer" was released on YouTube on July 29, 2016, and has since garnered over two billion views.[74] Billboard noted Halsey's solo verse as a favorable part of the song, and the song earned her a Grammy Awardnomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.[75][76]
2017–present: Hopeless Fountain Kingdom
Halsey announced work on her second studio album prior to the release of Badlands, with progress on the record continuing throughout 2016 and 2017.[77] In January 2017, she released the single "Not Afraid Anymore"; it appears on the soundtrack of the film Fifty Shades Darker (2017).[78] It peaked at number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number one on the New Zealand Heatseekers chart.[79][80] "Now or Never" was released on April 4, 2017, as the lead single from her second studio album, and because it preceded the release of her second studio album, it was released as an instant grat with the album's pre-order.[81] The song peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified double Platinum by RIAA.[82] It reached the top 20 of Australia and Malaysia, along with the top 15 of four other US Billboard charts.[83][84][85] Halsey promoted the song and the upcoming album on Jimmy Fallon and at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards in May.[86][87] Two promotional singles were also made available prior to the release of the album: "Eyes Closed", which was certified Gold by RIAA, and "Strangers", which peaked at number 100 on the Billboard Hot 100.[88]
Halsey released her second studio album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, on June 2, 2017.[89] The album consisted of more "radio friendly" songs in comparison to her previous work, which she attributed to her desire to prove she was "more than capable" of creating "radio-ready" music.[90] This album also consisted of music that was inspired by artists and genres ranging from synth-pop to Motown.[26] Much like her debut album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom is a concept album that revolves around a pair of lovers in a tale based on Romeo and Juliet; the project was inspired by her breakup with Lido.[91] The album also focuses on Halsey's bisexuality and on bisexual characters.[92][93][94] The album debuted atop the Billboard 200 and the Canadian Albums Chart. First week sales in the US were of 106,000 equivalent album units, with the album later being certified Platinum by RIAA.[95]Due to the album reaching number one, Halsey became the first woman to achieve a number one album in the US in 2017.[96] The album's second single, "Bad at Love", was released on August 22 and had better commercial performance in the US, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, which made it her highest peak as a lead artist at the time.[97] It was certified triple Platinum by RIAA, and sold more than 200,000 records outside the US.[98][99][100] The song also reached the top three of four other US Billboardcharts.[101] To promote Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, Halsey embarked on the Hopeless Fountain Kingdom World Tour, which began on September 29, 2017, her twenty-third birthday.[102] Halsey also performed surprise DJ sets at Emo Nite in Los Angeles in 2017.[103]
In December 2017, Halsey's collaboration with then boyfriend G-Eazy "Him & I", peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100,[104] and was certified double Platinum by RIAA.[105]The song also reached the top ten of 13 other countries' charts.[106] In mid 2017 she collaborated with the band Thirty Seconds to Mars on the song "Love Is Madness" for their album America. In late 2017, Halsey became one of the top five female artists in the US on both Spotify and Billboard's 2017 end of the year lists.[107]
On March 15, 2018, Halsey released "Alone", along with a new version featuring American rapper Big Sean and British rapperStefflon Don. It was released as the third and final single fromHopeless Fountain Kingdom, and in April she released its music video.[108] "Alone" was certified Platinum by RIAA and reached number one on Billboard's Dance Club chart, though only peaked at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100.[98][85][85] Halsey sang with Khalid for Benny Blanco's debut single "Eastside", which was released on July 12, 2018, along with a music video discussing various parts of Halsey's life.[109][110] The song reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts of five other countries.[111] L Also this year she appeared in two films: she voiced Wonder Woman in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, and cameoed as herself in A Star Is Born, directed by Bradley Cooper.[112][113][114]
On October 4, 2018, Halsey released a non-album single titled "Without Me".[115][116]'Without Me' is her, "... first solo-record since 2017." She stated that this song is also very personal to her.[117][118] On October 29, the official music video for "Without Me" was released, featuring a "G-Eazy lookalike" following their second breakup.[119][120] This song went on to become Halsey's most successful single as a lead artist to date, becoming her first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo artist. It remained in the top five for over 17 consecutive weeks.[121] It also reached the top ten of 24 other countries' charts and sold more than four million units worldwide.[122][122] Due to "Without Me" reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Halsey became the eighth woman to achieve multiple number ones on the chart during the 2010s.[123] On January 9, 2019, Halsey released a remix of "Without Me" featuring American rapper Juice WRLD.[124] On February 9, Halsey appeared on Saturday Night Live as the host and musical guest.[125] Her performance was praised, with ratings for the show rising and a younger audience watching.[126] On February 13, her collaboration with Yungblud was released; a song called "11 Minutes".[127] The music video for the song was later released on February 22.[128]
In March 2019, Halsey announced that she had began work on her third studio album, set to be released in 2019.[129] Her feature on the BTS song "Boy With Luv" is set for release on April 12.
Artistry
Influences
Growing up, Halsey's father listened to The Notorious B.I.G., Slick Rick, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and 2Pac, and her mother listened to The Cure, Alanis Morissette, and Nirvana. She said their music taste has been a great influence on her.[31] Halsey called Panic! at the Disco the "band that changed [her] fucking life"[130] and credits Lady Gaga for giving her the strength to be herself.[131] Halsey mentioned a Long Island rock band, Brand New, as both an influence and a favorite of hers, once changing her biography on Instagram to "the devil and God are raging inside me", a reference to their third album.[132] Her other influences include Kanye West,[133] The Weeknd,[134] Amy Winehouse,[135] and Bright Eyes.[136]
Cinema also influenced Halsey's development as a singer and songwriter, "There's plenty of musicians that I love and respect, but I think that I'm the most inspired by cinema,"[137]she said. Her influences include directors Quentin Tarantino, Harmony Korine, and Larry Clark.[137]
Music style and themes
Halsey is noted for her distinctive "indie" style of singing,[33][138][139][140] which has garnered controversial feedback.[141] She sings with an "accent" different from her speaking voice.[142] She is an electropop, synth-pop, and indie pop artist.[143][144] [145] The New York Times' Jon Caramanica noted, "Halsey arrived as part of a slew of female pop rebels who emerged in the wake of Lorde's early-2010s recalibration of the genre's operating hierarchies."[146] When speaking of Badlands, Billboard stated, "Halsey's larger-than-life vision combines the synthy darkness of Lorde, the neon-pop chutzpah of Miley Cyrus and the flickering film noir of Lana Del Rey."[147]

The biggest influence on her live performances is Adam Lazzara, the frontman of Taking Back Sunday,[148] as she said, "One of the most inspiring things I've ever seen is watching [Taking Back Sunday] live and watching Adam use that microphone as a prop and I thought yep, I'm gonna do that."[136]
Public image
Halsey has long been described as a "problematic" public figure.[149] She has been described as "fake deep" and Tumblr inspired (Halsey arose to fame from Tumblr),[150] and has gained controversy for singing with a "pretentious" voice after a video of her singingBlink-182 in a mall was leaked in February 2016.[151][152] She gained controversy early in her career for pre-fame Tweets that were posted from 2009-2012 in which she tweeted "inappropriate" things.[153] She then gained controversy after allegedly calling herself "tri-bi" in an interview; due to being biracial, bipolar, and bisexual. Halsey however stated that the term is a trivializing way to identify her and condemned the label as a misquote.[154] She has also been criticized for alleged "plagiarism" of other artists' music, which she has denied.[155] She gained controversy in 2016 after several fan interactions, some involving Halsey kissing underage fans,[149] and others involving Halsey "mistreating" her fans.[156]However, a source in 2017 called her "one of the most caring celebrities towards her fans."[157] Halsey has not given her fans a fandom nickname stating that she did not want to create any distance.[158] She stated in 2017 that although she passes as white, she is a black woman and proud of her heritage.[159][160][161][162][163] In 2018, she defended herself after she was accused of not being in the LGBT community because she was dating a man at the time, stating “I’m a young bisexual woman, and I’ve spent a large part of my life trying to validate myself — to my friends, to my family, to myself — trying to prove that who I love and how I feel is not a phase; it’s not part of some confusion that’s going to change or could be manipulated. So I tried really hard to find the courage this year to write female pronouns into my music”.[164]
Halsey has described herself as an "in-between role mode," and an "inconvenient woman" due to her clothes, lyrics, tattoos, themes, and statements.[165][166] She is known for her many hairstyles, but became most known for her signature dyed blue hair in her early career.[167] She has appeared on the cover of magazines such as Forbes 30 Under 30,Billboard, Paper, and Playboy.[168] She has appeared in advertisements for Jeep, Beats Electronics, and ModCloth.[169][170][171] She has been described a feminist icon,[172] and has called out tabloids for exploiting her body.[173] She has also been called the "voice of her generation".[174] Her relationship with G-Eazy gathered significant media attention due to rumors of drug usage, arrest, cheating, and G-Eazy's feuds with other artists.[175][176]Their relationship was described as a surprise duo, but also praised as "couple goals" and compared to "Joker and Harley Quinn as musicians."[177][178] After their first split in July 2018, Halsey cried while performing "Sorry" on her world tour.[179]
Halsey praised Lady Gaga in October 2016 after collaborators The Chainsmokers criticized her, and after a user pointed out the criticizing from Halsey's collaborators, she replied saying that had nothing to do with her, prompting one member of The Chainsmokers totweet "fuck you bald bitch" at Halsey. He however stated that the account was hacked and that they had remained friends after their highly successful collaboration.[180] In June 2017, Halsey received backlash for collaborating with Quavo, an artist who has made homophobic remarks. She stated that she has never spoken to Quavo, and continued to say that she wouldn't put "a lot of people" on her songs. She stated "Iggy Azalea? Absolutely not. She had a complete disregard for black culture. Fucking moron. I watched her career dissolve and it fascinated me."[181] That same month, Halsey received backlash for allegedly implying that Britney Spears does not write her own music, a claim she denied.[182] She also criticized Demi Lovato, stating that her song "Cool for the Summer" treated bisexuality as a taboo.[183]
In April 2018, Halsey criticized hotel industries for only having "watered-down white people shampoo", and pushed for more of them to have shampoo inclusive of people of color. She went on to say that the mental hospital she stayed in as a teenager also had no shampoo options for people of color, and that staying there was bad enough without any hair treatment. It caused backlash and media attention, with many stating that she was "fake woke."[184]
Halsey has long identified as an "alternative" artist, stating that she can do pop collaborations without being considered a pop artist, similar to Kendrick Lamar. She states that she is only classified as pop because she is a woman, and complained that Lady Gagahad to wear a "meat dress" to not be considered a pop artist.[185] The statement drew controversy and many consider Halsey a pop star artist. However, some of her music is considered pop while some is considered alternative.[186] In 2019, she called herself "the anti-popstar" and stated she doesn't care how people identify her music, as long as it connects to people.[187]
Activism
During the 2016 USA presidential election, Halsey was an avid supporter of Bernie Sanders and urged her fans to vote for him.[188]
At seventeen years old Halsey attempted to commit suicide.[23][189] As a result, she participated in the mental health and suicide prevention awareness campaign called "I'm Listening", which was hosted by radio network Entercom and broadcast live on September 10, 2017.[4]
Halsey is a feminist.[172] After the 2017 Women's March, Halsey sent out a tweet that promised to donate one dollar to Planned Parenthood for every retweet it received.[190] She ended up donating 100,000 dollars to Planned Parenthood.[190] Halsey delivered a speech to more than 200,000 protesters at the 2018 Women's March.[5][191] Instead of a traditional speech, Halsey performed a five-minute poem titled "A Story Like Mine", in which she told personal stories of sexual assault and violence throughout her life.[5] Her personal narrative included accompanying her best friend to Planned Parenthood after she had been raped, her personal account of sexual assault by neighbors and boyfriends, and women sexually assaulted by Olympic doctor Larry Nassar.[192]
Halsey stated, "Listen, and then yell at the top of your lungs, be a voice for all those who have prisoner tongues."[193][192] Halsey read, "What do you mean this happened to me? You can't put your hands on me. You don't know what my body has been through. I'm supposed to be safe now. I've earned it."[194][192] She completed her speech by requesting all—"Black, Asian, poor, wealthy, trans, cis, Muslim, Christian"—sexual assault victims to listen and support each other.[192] A. J. Willingham of CNN opined in a headline that "Halsey's Women's March speech moved people around the world."[195] In May 2018 Halsey attacked Ivanka Trump over Twitter, complaining that she was too relaxed while her father hurt immigrant children.[196]
In November 2018 Halsey performed at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, along numerous other artists,[197] but in December she called out the company for its lack of inclusion of transgender models in its various shows, stating "as a member of the LGBT+ community, I have no tolerance for a lack of inclusivity. Especially not motivated by stereotype."[198][199] Later that month, she performed her hit song "Without Me" on The Voice and received backlash for "sensually" dancing with backup dancer Jade Chynoweth. Many called the backlash homophobic and Halsey defended her performance.[200][201] In a January 2019 interview with Glamour, she advocated for a stronger presence of women in music.[202]
Personal life
Residence
In June 2017, Halsey purchased a mansion in Los Angeles, California.[203] In February of that same year, she adopted a dog.[204]
Tattoos
Halsey has 29 confirmed tattoos, with each meaning something different. Her most notable tattoo is an upside down horseshoe on her right shoulder. She explained:
"In tattoo culture, you're not supposed to tattoo a horseshoe upside down because it means all the luck is spilling out, so it's actually bad luck. I got an upside down horseshoe to signify that I don't need luck. I work really, really hard, and I believe in the stars aligning, but I don't believe that anything happens to anyone based out of sheer luck. I believe people work really hard, and they manifest what they want, and what they need, and what they're hopeful for, and that's what this is -- a reminder."[205]
Relationships
Halsey is openly bisexual.[206]
From 2015 to 2016, Halsey dated Norwegian producer Lido, who helped produce Badlandsand inspired Hopeless Fountain Kingdom.[207] After their performance of "The Feeling" onToday in November 2015, Halsey was romantically linked to Canadian singer Justin Bieber, with the duo denying dating rumors, as Halsey was still dating Lido at that time.[208] Dating rumors were sparked in November 2016 between Halsey and collaborator Andrew Taggartof The Chainsmokers, due to the music video and 2016 MTV Video Music Awardsperformance for "Closer"; the rumors were never confirmed.[209][210]
In 2017, Halsey began dating American rapper G-Eazy. They met at a party in 2017 and although they pursued different music, they found common ground for their collaboration "Him & I", which discussed their love and lifestyle.[211] The couple broke up in July 2018; their relationship was off and on again until September when the relationship was officially over.[212] Halsey confirmed in a 2019 interview with Glamour that her October 2018 single "Without Me" is partially about their relationship.[213]
She is currently dating British artist Yungblud; they began dating in 2019.[214]
Personal issues
Since the beginning of her career, Halsey has been open about her personal health; in 2015, speaking of her career, she stated "I'm just this fucked-up stoner kid who made it.".[12]
Halsey has bipolar disorder. She was diagnosed with this mental disorder at the age of seventeen, stating that her mother also has it.[215] When Halsey was seventeen she attempted to commit suicide, which is what led to her diagnosis and a seventeen-day admission to a psychiatric hospital.[216][23] It was not long after her suicide attempt that Halsey began having success in the music industry. She has stated that singing and performing has helped her manage the symptoms she experiences from having bipolar disorder.[217] Despite the struggles Halsey has faced as a result of this mood disorder, she has said that she embraces being bipolar because it makes her "really empathetic".[215]
Halsey was diagnosed with endometriosis in 2016 and went public with it on her Twitter account.[218][219] Halsey accredits a miscarriage she experienced in 2015 to her endometriosis, originally stating in 2016 that it was due to her hectic touring schedule.[220][216][221] Only hours after Halsey realized she was having a miscarriage she went on stage to perform during a tour because she did not want to hurt her career by missing a performance.[222] Halsey chronicled her struggles with endometriosis on the talk show The Doctors in April 2018, where she revealed she was going to freeze her eggs.[220]
Also in 2018, Halsey spoke out about her endometriosis and the pain it causes at the Blossom Ball, which is run by the Endometriosis Foundation of America.[223] At the Blossom Ball, she stated that, "Sometimes I'm bloated, I'm on an I.V., I'm sick, I'm on medicine, and I'm backstage, terrified that I'm going to bleed through my clothes in the middle of my show."[223] She told people who attended this event that she wanted to speak out because the media often portrays her as having perfect physical health despite her struggle with endometriosis.[223] In January 2017, Halsey underwent surgery in an attempt to lessen the pain caused by the disorder.[224] Halsey has not disclosed what type of surgery she underwent.[216]
